Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum Program Notice of Upcoming Extension

If you frequent the Shoppers Drug Mart website you probably noticed the memo that they put up about their Optimum Program. Many of our readers, and including myself, were wondering if the Optimum Program was going to carry on after the Loblaws acquisition, it looks like it will, for now.

Their fine print state that the Optimum Program is in effect until the end 2016, which is totally normal for terms and conditions to exist until the end of the current year, once the new year starts they adjust those dates to the end of that year (if they want to).

"Notice of upcoming extension of the Shoppers Optimum Program.
Currently, the Shoppers Optimum Program ("Program") terms and conditions state that the Program terminates on December 31, 2016. The Program's terms and conditions that will come into effect on December 31, 2016 11:59 p.m. will remain unchanged except the following:
Section 42: There will be no specific end date to the Program and 45 days advance notice will be given in the event that the Program ends.
Section 43: Members will have the ability to redeem points for 90 days following any future end date.
Section 44: The first sentence that states that the Program will be extended or terminated with 30 days notice will be removed, as it will no longer be applicable.
If you continue to use your Shoppers Optimum Card after December 31, 2016, you will be considered to have accepted this new term."

I think the Optimum Program is the best rewards loyalty program out there of its kind. I definitely hope that it keeps going, I redeem so much free stuff using it every year.

If you're worried about the program ending and your points expiring, there is a speculation in the terms and conditions about that above too. However, I suggest redeeming right away if you are worried that you might forget or miss out. Their Spend Your Points days have been less frequent since the Loblaws acquisition so I've redeemed several times since the last one in April because I got impatient.

I have contacted Shoppers customer service and they responded that there are no plans to end the program. We can assume that the end dates will carry over until the end of 2017, unless we hear otherwise.
